about

The return of underground radio, shaped and enhanced and mashed-up through the lens of 50 years of music and life experience. Inventive original compositions, jams and covers that overlay and intertwine the work of Neil Young, John Coltrane, Muddy Waters, Pink Floyd, Cream, Frank Zappa and more.

Outer Park is a blend of old and new. Across generations and an array of styles, Outer Park brings together a mix of deep roots (three of the members first played in a band half a century ago) and fresh encounters (some of the musicians literally met the morning of the first recording session).

With musical roots in the frothy times of the late 1960s, a time when social unrest was upending not just the United States, but many parts of the world—a time when the new medium of FM radio broke down stylistic barriers like a musical blender—Outer Park brings a fresh take on a large crosscut of music from rock to blues to country to jazz to psychedelic on their first album, 1968 Slight Return, recorded in 2018 and released in 2019.

Guitarist Patrick S. Noonan, bassist James Singleton, and keyboards/guitarist Charles Tobermann grew up together in Springfield, Illinois, and first played in a band together in 1968. Singer Chelsea Austin brings the fresh eyes, ears, and voice of a younger generation, along with a combination of musical respect, absence of nostalgia, and new ways of approaching the songs.

Jazz powerhouse Jason Marsalis behind the drum kit and on vibes adds to the take of a younger generation and injects new elements into the stylistic stew that is Outer Park.
